By the old harbour

A volta is an arch — the curved stone vault you walk under in every old Istrian town. Ours stands where the fishing boats tie up on the Umag waterfront, a few steps from the old town walls, and guests have been walking under it for more than a generation.

This is a konoba in the true sense: family-run, unhurried, with a menu that follows the sea and the seasons. Mussels in wine sauce that regulars cross borders for, fish straight off the grill, and a terrace where the water is close enough to count the fish. Sit down, order a carafe of house malvazija, and let the evening do its work.

From the grill

Whole sea bream and sea bass, calamari, scampi — over open flame, with chard and potatoes the way every Istrian grandmother serves them.

For two, or for the whole table: lobster, scallops, mussels and the catch of the day on one long silver tray.

Pasta & risotto

Seafood spaghetti, scampi pasta, shrimp risotto — homemade, generous, made for sharing (though nobody ever does).

From the land

Ribs from the grill with roast potatoes, pljeskavica, Istrian prosciutto with pecorino, and pizza for the youngest sailors.

Umag, Istria

Umag is Istria's western gate — a small Venetian town wrapped around a harbour, where fishing boats still outnumber yachts and the old town smells of salt and grilled fish. Its narrow streets end at the water on every side, and its lighthouse at Savudrija, just up the coast, is the oldest working one on the Adriatic.

Volta sits right on that waterfront walk, between the town walls and the sea. Come for the tennis in July, the truffles in October, or no reason at all — and when your walk around the old town brings you back to the harbour, dinner is waiting.
